SHIRAKAWA, VILLAGE OF GASSHO OR,
PRAYING-HANDS CONSTRUCTION-STYLE HOUSES,
AND WORLD INHERITANCE COMMUNITY
Shirakawa Village is well-known for its unique "Gassho Zuruki",or praying-
hands-style architecture. Six-hindred eighty thousand tourists visited this
beautiful village in 1995. Traditional Japanese architectural techniques can
be seen in people's houses, and these private houses form a magnificent
landscape.
The Gassho community of Ogimachi was designated as an Important
Traditional Building Preservation Area by the Japanese government, and was
also registered as a World Inheritance by UNESCO in December, 1995.
